John the Baptist (Ancient Greek: Ἰωάννης ὁ βαπτιστής, Ioánnes (h)o baptistés or Ἰωάννης ὁ βαπτίζων, Ioánnes (h)o baptízon,[5][6][7][8][9] known as the Prophet Yahya in the Quran),[10] also known as John the Baptizer,[11][12][13] was a Jewish itinerant preacher[14] in the early first century AD. John is revered as a major religious figure[15] in Christianity, Islam, the Bahá'í Faith,[16] and Mandaeism. He is called a prophet by all of these traditions, and is honoured as a saint in many Christian traditions. John used baptism as the central symbol or sacrament[17] of his messianic movement.
